We experienced a 53 year-old man with the benign symmetric lipomatosis and treated him with the surgical excision on the neck and the upper back.
The benign symmetric lipomatosis is characteriszed by diffuse symmetric abnormal accumulation of lipomatous tissue on the neck, back, chest, lower abdomen, flank, axilla and groin, etc.
The pathopyhsiology is unknown. The clinical course is, although variable, progressive over a period of several years. Madelung likened the distribution to that of a "horse collar." No malignant change has been suggested.
This patient is a farmer and has a habit of excessive alcohol intake for several years. At first, the simple exision was done for the mass of the upper back and thereafter, bilateral neck disectcon for the mass of the neck. This disease was difficult to differentiate from the lipoma except some increase in vascular and fibrous tissues. It was nonencapsulated so that the complete excision was very difficult.
The purpose of this paper is to report a rare benign symmetric lipomatosis and to discuss the operative therapy.
